Name     : M. MARIA ANTONY RAJ

1987 Graduated in Fine Arts from Govt. College of Arts & Crafts, Chennai

Mobile Space:

I primarily work with various materials like metals, bronze, copper, clay, thread, plastics, woods etc. I basically work with forms which are supplemented by materials, nature and expression; the core idea underlying the work is wind, air, water and earth. The use of material forms, signs, symbols which work as a metaphor in my work. To certain extent to overcome the limitation of the medium, use ephemeral material such as plastics, cotton, thread etc.

Mobile sculpture needs much technical understanding and simplified clear thought so that idea can be communicated in much intense way.

My mobile sculpture is on perfect balance so that it will have just a right, subtle movement, but not lose its form in the space. Mobile sculpture has a better connectivity or transaction with the space around. They are more vocal as they alter dimension in the space.

I portray my self as outsider, who hangs between wisdom and chaos, harmony and discord. Life Is suspended between superficial and deep happening. My forms depict illusion, disharmony and revengeful cruelty of the world and the evolution of the human being through this towards serenity.

My sentimental philosophical and moral stands are visible in my sculptures as is the holiness, I aspire as a visionary.

Medium of works:

Being a sculpture I primarily work with various materials like metals, bronze, copper, clay, thread, plastics, woods etc.

Concepts:

I would like to experiment on larger space with huge forms. My work is usually an arrangement of several fragments where copper sheets, copper wires are been assembles and used. The sculptures are rather being too heavy and solid they are with simplified figures and transparent.

Ants  These ants are installed in  Crowne Plaza Chennai Adyar Park hotel ,Chennai. Ants - It is the series of work done with ants as subject. Ants collecting food in unity is part of our collective consciousness . The act of sharing food with one another is a religious experience, Art's essentially function is to share the act of sharing and union becomes a strong metaphor for this work . The idea of the micro becoming the macro takes centre stage, I have purposefully made this work large, dimensions being 300 cms by 600 cms and mounted it on wall, it is to bring the smallest being i.e ant into our immediately noticeable visible world What was stuck in a remote corner of our consciousness suddenly becomes a larger reality. A reality we have to confront and engage with. To give a feel of earthliness I have made the sculpture in brass and copper.   Hindu Article:   https://www.thehindu.com/entertainment/art/maria-antony-raj-on-his-award-winning-sculpture/article3801896...
